Why Local Plumbers and Contractors Lose Jobs to Their Website (Not Their Work)

The Job You Lost Before You Picked Up the Phone
A homeowner's pipe bursts at 9pm. They grab their phone and search "plumber near me." Five results come up. They tap the first one — slow to load, hard to read on mobile, no reviews visible, no clear phone number. They go back and tap the second one. Clean, fast, reviews front and centre, big "Call Now" button. They call the second plumber.
The first plumber never knew the job existed.
This happens dozens of times a day for trade businesses across every industry — plumbers, electricians, builders, roofers, landscapers, cleaners. The work is excellent. The reputation in the local area is strong. But the website is silently losing jobs to competitors whose work may not even be as good.
Here are the 5 most common website problems we see in local trade businesses — and what each one is costing you.
1. Your Phone Number Is Not the First Thing People See
When someone lands on your website from a mobile search, they are usually in one of two states: they have a problem right now and need someone fast, or they are comparing a few local options and deciding who to call.
In both cases, the phone number needs to be visible the moment the page loads. Not after scrolling. Not buried in a Contact page. Immediately visible, large, and clickable.
Most trade business websites we review have the phone number:
- Only in the footer
- In small text in a header that's hard to see on mobile
- On the Contact page only, with no link from the homepage
- Not clickable (so mobile users have to manually dial)
What this costs you: Every visitor who can't find your number in 5 seconds is a potential call that goes to someone else. For a trade business getting 200 website visits per month, losing even 10% of those to a missing phone number is 20 missed opportunities monthly.
The fix: Put your phone number in large, clickable text in the top section of every page. On mobile, it should be a tap-to-call link. Consider adding a sticky bar at the bottom of the mobile screen that says "Call Now" — this alone has significantly increased call volume for trade clients we've worked with.
2. Your Website Does Not Show Reviews
You have 47 five-star Google reviews. Your customers love you. You've been in business for 22 years and your reputation locally is excellent.
None of that is on your website.
A potential client who finds your website for the first time has no idea any of that is true. They see a generic website with no social proof and nothing to distinguish you from the competitor three results below you who has been operating for 18 months.
Reviews are the single most important trust signal for local trade businesses online. A homeowner letting a stranger into their house to do work needs to feel confident in that decision. Reviews are what provide that confidence.
What this costs you: Research consistently shows that 93% of consumers say online reviews impact their purchasing decisions. Trade businesses without visible reviews convert visitors to calls at a significantly lower rate than those with reviews prominently displayed.
The fix: Pull your best Google reviews onto your website homepage. Display the reviewer's name, their rating, and their words. If you have a lot of reviews, show the overall rating number prominently ("4.9 stars across 47 reviews"). Link to your Google Business Profile so visitors can read all of them. Update this section every few months as new reviews come in.
3. Your Website Doesn't Load Fast Enough on Mobile
Most searches for local trade services happen on mobile. Someone has a leaking tap, a broken fence, a boiler that won't start. They pick up their phone and search.
If your website takes more than 3 seconds to load on mobile, a significant portion of those visitors will leave before they ever see your content. Google's own research shows that 53% of mobile visitors abandon a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load.
Trade business websites are particularly prone to this problem because many were built on outdated platforms with large unoptimised images, heavy themes, and too many plugins.
What this costs you: If 200 people visit your website per month and 40% leave before it loads, that's 80 potential enquiries lost before they even saw your phone number or your reviews.
The fix: Run your website through PageSpeed Insights right now. If your mobile score is below 70, you have a speed problem. The most common causes are oversized images, WordPress plugins loading unnecessary scripts, and poor hosting. Many speed issues can be fixed without a full rebuild — but if the site is on outdated technology, a rebuild on modern infrastructure will deliver dramatically better results.
4. Your Website Does Not Clearly State What You Do and Where
"Welcome to [Business Name]" is not a headline. It tells a visitor nothing about what you do, who you serve, or where you operate.
Trade businesses rely heavily on local search. When someone searches "electrician in [suburb]" and lands on your website, they need to immediately confirm three things:
1. You are an electrician (not a general contractor, not a handyman)
2. You serve their area
3. You are available and taking new work
Most trade business websites we review fail on all three counts within the first screen. The headline is vague. The service area is buried or missing entirely. There's no indication of availability or lead times.
What this costs you: A confused visitor leaves. If a potential client isn't immediately certain you serve their area and do the work they need, they go back to Google and call someone else. There's no second chance.
The fix: Your homepage headline should state exactly what you do and where. For example: "Certified Plumber Serving [City] and Surrounds — Available 7 Days." Your service area should be explicit — list the suburbs or regions you cover. If you offer emergency or same-day service, say so prominently. These are major decision factors for many clients.
5. There Is No Easy Way to Request a Quote
A phone call is not the only way people want to get in touch. A significant portion of your potential clients — particularly for larger jobs like full bathroom renovations, rewiring, or landscaping projects — want to describe their job and request a quote without necessarily speaking to someone first.
If your website only offers a phone number and no contact form or quote request form, you are losing every visitor who falls into this category.
Equally damaging: having a contact form that is broken, sends to an email address nobody monitors, or asks for so much information that visitors abandon it halfway through.
What this costs you: For higher-value jobs where clients are comparing multiple quotes, losing the ability for them to submit a detailed enquiry online means they move on to a competitor whose website makes it easy.
The fix: Add a simple quote request form that asks: name, contact number, email, type of job, rough location, and a description field. That's it — six fields. Keep it short. Make sure it sends to an email address someone checks daily. Consider adding a confirmation message so the visitor knows their enquiry was received. For urgent jobs, note your typical response time ("We respond to all enquiries within 2 hours during business hours").
The Bigger Picture: Your Website Is Your 24/7 Salesperson
The best trade businesses in any local area are not necessarily the best at the trade. They are the best at being found and the best at converting that initial contact into a booked job.
Your website is operating every hour of every day. It's being judged by potential clients at 11pm when something breaks, at 7am before they start work, on weekends when you're not available to answer the phone. It either works for you during those hours or it doesn't.
The good news: fixing these problems is not complicated or expensive. Most of the issues above can be resolved without a complete rebuild. You can see what a proper professional website costs — including a quick launch option starting at $499 — on our services and pricing page.
